How The Pride of Central came to be - and how you can finish your first novel.

The Adventure Begins

Updated: Jan 28, 2019

Hello, and welcome to “Bohr's Blog”. This is my first blog entry as I share my story about how I went from dreaming about becoming a published author to finally holding my novel in my hands.

I hope to make the blog informative for anyone who has the dream of writing their own fiction story, anyone who has an interest in the creative process of making fiction, or anybody who is looking forward to the public release of my novel, The Pride of Central.

First, a little background about myself. I write for a living, but I had not written fiction (at least not successfully) before I started my first draft of “The Pride of Central” in late fall of 2016. I work as a sports writer, covering high school and college athletics for various newspapers. At first, it would seem as if writing for newspapers would give me an advantage when I decided to write my first fiction story.

It did. But there was not much of an advantage.

While I was used to writing, the style of writing that fiction requires is completely different from what a journalist needs. In newspaper writing, the main goal is conveying the facts to the reader. In fiction, an author needs to make the reader care about the characters and what they are going through.

I knew that before I started writing my manuscript. But there were many other hurdles to overcome.

Where do I begin? The very first scene? The last scene? Somewhere in the middle?

How do I edit my story well enough for people to read it?

Why do I get this fear in my gut every time I think about someone opening up my book?

If I fail at writing this book, does that say something negative about me?

I went through all of these things several times, and I believe most first-time writers do. This blog will take you through how I addressed these issues and more until The Pride of Central is released publicly in late March.

I hope to update this blog each Monday, starting on February 4. I will be sharing my experiences and advice, but not the one perfect way to write your novel. There is no one way for everyone. But if you are an aspiring writer, I hope this helps you overcome any of the obstacles you are facing until you too can hold that first book in your hands.

Next week: I Have an Idea! (So what do I do with it?)
